Welcome to first step fitness and personal training. My goal is to help clients from all walks of life achieve the results they deserve. I offer a number of different services to meet client's needs.

I believe in a holistic approach to health and fitness and believe in a balanced life without restrictions.


Who am I?

Hi, I'm Mel, I'm the owner of First Step Fitness and Personal Training.

You probably want to know more about the person you talking to. Here's a quick snapshot.

• I was born and raised in outback NSW and now live in Cairns

• Lover of spag bol and nachos

• Love to travel and explore

• Lifting weights is my thing

• I am the proudest fur mumma to my beloved spoilt Labrador retriever, Archie

• I run all the programs here at first step fitness and wake up every morning loving what I do.

My Story?  

My name is Melissa Zanon, everyone calls me Mel😊 I began my fitness journey 15 years ago. I was obese (I stopped weighing myself when I got over 90kg) so somewhere between 90-100kg. (At only 163cms tall). I take full responsibility for “letting myself go”. I was depressed in a bad relationship, bad job, became lazy and not a good state of mind. Long story short, I quit that job, ended that relationship, moved to a new city, and changed my life around. Was it easy? Hell no. Was it worth it? Hell yes. It took time to change my story. I began going to the gym but thought everyone was watching me and judging. I began to make better food choices and eventually it all started to come together. I successfully lost 30kg all on my own. (Go me!). I then began to think how I could take all this I was learning on my own and learn more. That’s when I decided to educate myself further. I enrolled in further study with first my cert 3 in fitness and then went on to complete cert 4 in fitness to become a qualified personal trainer. That’s when I decide it was time to help others. I know what they are going through because I’ve been there. I wanted to help others achieve their own health and fitness goals. I began my personal training business in 2013. During this time, I have coached and trained 1000’s of individuals to help reach their own health and fitness goals. I have since gone on to run bootcamps in my local area as well as personal training sessions. And now I’m venturing into the new world of online fitness training to help others who I can’t access in my local community, but I know I can help! I can’t wait to get to know you all and work together on this next chapter of your life 😊

Children’s fitness and nutrition certificate

Level 1 and 2 bootcamp certification

First aid and CPR certification

I offer in person training sessions (individual, pairs/couples/small private groups)

I also run Bootcamps in the cairns area.

NUTRITION advice

I offer nutrition advice and guidance within the professional scope of practice for a fitness professional. Advice that provides basic healthy eating information and advice through the application of nationally endorsed nutritional standards and guidelines (in particular, the Australian Dietary Guidelines). The Guidelines include information about the types and amounts of foods, food groups and dietary patterns that clients should aim for to promote health and wellbeing, reduce the risk of diet-related health conditions and chronic disease. All meal plans provided are inline with the Australian dietary guidelines.
